Cann River fire
Date of Issue:
May 1, 2024

We were saddened to learn fire damaged three commercial properties in Cann River in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Mayor Cr Tom Crook said Council has staff working in the town to offer support during this difficult time – a place officer with local knowledge and a member of our emergency management team.

The fire impacted a cafe, vacant shop and a motel. The café is a major employer in the local area.

"Being a small, isolated township, Council is aware the loss of accommodation and a major employer will have a significant impact on the wellbeing of residents and the Cann Valley economy," Cr Crook said.

"We are assisting affected business owners and their employees by connecting them to the right supports. Assistance for the wider community is also being established by local organisations."

Cann River, where two highways meet, is a major rest stop area for people travelling to and from NSW.
