REDUCE WASTE FOR
GREENER LIVING
For immediate release – Thursday, 22 October 2009
Reducing waste at home and at work can make a difference to the local environment and people’s private bank balance, according to Shire waste administration and education officer Helen Kelly.
“There are many ways people can make changes to their everyday behaviour to live greener,” she said, “and it is easy!”
Ms Kelly said reducing personal waste was one of the easiest and best ways for people to take their first step towards living greener.
“People can reduce their waste when shopping by taking their own bags and buying fresh food and vegetables loose rather than pre-packaged,” she said. “This is where considerable financial savings can also be achieved.
“Reduction in waste can also be achieved at work by doing simple things like having your own mug in place of using disposable cups and taking your lunch to work in reusable containers instead of using plastic wrap and individually packaged beverages.
“Office workers can also reduce paper consumption by photocopying and printing on both sides as well as re-using old binders, folders, report covers and other general office equipment.”
Ms Kelly said that reduction in the amount of waste going to landfill has many environmental benefits including a reduction in CO2 emissions from landfills and prolonging the life of our current landfills.
