FURTHER WORKS IN MAIN ST
TO CHECK UNDERGROUND TANKS
For immediate release – Monday, 5 October 2009
Further works are to be undertaken in Main Street, Bairnsdale to continue the investigation into any potential impacts from disused storage tanks under the footpath adjacent to the former Big Garage site now occupied by Go Lo and Karls Megasports stores.
East Gippsland Shire’s Acting Director Services, Gordon Charles, said it was necessary to undertake the tests in the general area of the tanks.
“As a result Council, together with the adjoining property owners and under the supervision of EPA Victoria, will investigate the soil immediately under the footpath and concrete floor slabs to determine whether there is any soil contamination or trapped vapour and if so, the extent of it,” he said.
“This will require us to undertake a number of soil bores and the installation of a monitoring point in Main Street.”
Mr Charles said it was expected that bore sinking would begin in shortly.
“Every effort will be made to reduce inconvenience to the community,” he said.
“Where possible work will be undertaken over a weekend or early in the working week as necessary to reduce the impact on businesses and the general public.
“However, to facilitate the work, some lane and partial road closures of Main Street will be required from time to time.”
