    About The Library

The East Gippsland Shire Library was established in 1995 following the amalgamation of the five shires which had previously contributed to, and managed the East Gippsland Regional Library Service.

The East Gippsland Regional Library Service began in 1962, and originally comprised the Shires of Alberton, Bairnsdale, Omeo, Orbost and Tambo. In 1967, the Town of Bairnsdale separated from the Shire to later become the City of Bairnsdale.

In 1969, the Shire of Alberton withdrew to become part of the Central Gippsland Regional Library Service.

The East Gippsland region is characterised by magnificent alpine and wilderness areas as well as the spectacular Gippsland Lakes. The region contains some of the most rugged and isolated areas in Victoria with the library service covering 21,056 square kilometres and having a population of approximately 38,000.

The main centres are Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Orbost and Paynesville where permanent libraries are located. The library also operates a mobile library service which visits 42 sites throughout the region on a two weekly and six weekly schedule.

    Libraries are Unique

Libraries are unique. In a world that's information rich, libraries are information smart. In person or online, where else can you access all the things you need, as well as personal service and assistance in finding it? Your local library is your ultimate search engine!

With access to the Net, magazines, storytimes and much more, your local library is a lot more than just books. Best of all membership and most activities are free!
