Council's Planning and Building Unit forms part of the Development Services Department, and chiefly manages Council's responsibilities under the relevant Planning and Building legislation, along with a number of related functions, these include: - Issuing planning permits
- Updating and amending the Planning Scheme
- Preparing new policies and strategies
- Issuing building certificates and maintaining building records
- Issuing certificates and dealing with other related approvals
The Planning and Building Unit is located in the Bairnsdale Corporate Centre Annexe,66 McCulloch Street, Bairnsdale and may be contacted on (03) 51539 500 or on the toll free Residents Information Line 1300 555 886.

| Planning Information | | Council has a legislative responsibility under the Planning and Environment Act 1987 to assess planning permit applications and to maintain and administer the East Gippsland Planning Scheme. Last year alone, Council processed over 650 planning permit applications.
Council's planning service also extends to providing advice and assistance to potential applicants and others wishing to use the planning system. Above all, our planners aim to assist Council to facilitate development which is appropriate to its location and which minimises conflicts with neighbours and promotes long-term sustainability.
